  • This week the newest “movie and dinner concept” Cinebistro announced they would officially open on Friday, September 4th in Cary’s Waverly Place. In addition to the movies, it features a chef-run kitchen offering creative American Bistro cuisine and full in-theatre service. And it is available to you whether you are joining them for a movie or not. Get tickets and all the details here.

Wake County Restaurant News

  • Saw in the News & Observer this week that the owners of Totopos in Cary have opened Viva DF Tequila & Taco Bar in Morrisville’s McCrimmon Corner Shopping Center (4075 Davis Drive). They serve lunch and dinner daily and brunch on Sunday. Not much on their website yet, but you can check them out on Facebook here.
  • Got word this week from the News & Observer, that Linus & Pepper’s, a temporary sandwich restaurant in downtown Raleigh, has decided to stay open permanently.
    The place plans to stick to serving sandwiches but will make changes to its menu, interior and hours. It was also announced that Jon Seelbinder, owner of both Linus & Pepper’s and Level Up, will also open a “trendy taco shop” in the space next door. Keep up with them on Facebook here.
  • Reader Rebecca Calhoun tipped me off to the fact that El Cerro in at Falls Village in Raleigh has closed. And now a sign announcing that Mi Cancun Mexican Restaurant is coming soon. Can’t help but think it is related to the Mi Cancun in Morrisville’s Grace Park. We will keep you posted.
  • The Triangle’s newest location of The Egg & I announced their grand opening date of August 31st. They will have a “training” day on August 30th (reservations are required and donations to The Carying Place are appreciated). Get all the details here.
  • Following a kitchen fire on August 15, Rocky Top Hospitality owner Dean Ogan announced that The Twisted Fork restaurant and bakery is expected to be closed for several months while undergoing renovation. That said, Twisted Fork Pastry Chef Richard Smith is still accepting dessert orders at 1705 Prime. He may be reached at [email protected] or by calling 919-850-2340. Durham, Orange & Chatham County Restaurant News

  • Got word from WRAL this week that Luna Rotisserie & Empanadas has opened in downtown Durham at 112 W. Main St. Luna focuses on South American cuisine. Congratulations to owner/chef Shawn Stokes. Check them out online here.
  • The Triangle Business Journal reported that Vegan Flava Cafe, a new vegetarian and vegan restaurant, is opening in the former Blue Note Grill space at 4125 Durham Chapel Hill Blvd. The grand opening is scheduled for August 29th. Check them out here.
  • The Daily Tar Heel broke the news this week that Sawasdee Thai Restaurant, with locations on Glenwood Avenue and Capital Boulevard in Raleigh, is launching a new restaurant in Chapel Hill at 110 N. Columbia Street in the site formerly occupied by Sakura Express (which closed after a 14-year run). Check out Sawasdee here.
  • Also in Chapel Hill, got word through the News & Observer that Captain Poncho’s planned grand opening on August 27th has been delayed due to a busted gas line. As of now, they are tentatively planning a new date of September 10th. We will keep you posted. Visit their site here.

Food Trucks

  • Thanks to a tip from Triangle Localista, we learned about the next possible food truck on the scene here in the Triangle – Boricua Soul Food Truck. They are in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign (and just a few dollars away from reaching their goal). Check them out here.
  • Mark your calendar to be in Durham for Labor Day Weekend (September 6th) for their huge food truck rodeo at Durham Central Park. This one will be from noon until 4 p.m. Get all the details here.

Events

  • Got word from my friend John Huisman (aka Triangle Explorer) that tickets are on sale now for Beericana, a craft beer & music festival in Holly Springs on September 12. Beericana is in its second year and all signs point to it being even better than last year. The festival will feature over 60 breweries from across the state and beyond, more food trucks than last year with at least 20 trucks. General admission tickets are $45 and VIP tickets are $75.   • Academy Street Bistro and TOPO Distillery are partnering to host a cocktail party to benefit the Interfaith Food Shuttle on October 1st at 5:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy four different cocktails, each with a different aged spirit from TOPO and heavy hors d’oeuvres.   • You’ll want to go ahead and mark your calendar for the 2nd Annual Triangle Oktoberfest coming to Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre on October 3rd and 4th. There will be some great authentic German fare as well as some amazing breweries. Get all the details here.   • And if you are into eating healthier, you might want to go ahead and get this event on your calendar – the 2015 Triangle Vegfest which will be held at Moore Square and City Market in downtown Raleigh on Saturday, October 17th from noon until 5 p.m. Get all the details here.

Food Bank Corner

  • It is that time of year again and big plans are in place for this year’s #FoodBank24 New Media Telethon. It will be held over two days, September 11-12 and lots of new features are in the works. With September 11th being a National Day of Service, there are tons of opportunities to volunteer and get your company involved. But do so quickly, as the Saturday morning slots are already filled!
