  • It is turkey time! If you don’t want to spend your Thanksgiving in the kitchen, we have some information you will be interested in. First up, Raleigh’s Q Shack offers up everything from whole smoked turkeys, to sides, to the entire turkey-day meal! Today, November 18th, is the last day to order! My family has been doing this for several years and it has been fantastic! Check out all the details here.

Wake County Restaurant News

  • Not sure how I missed this, but Dawat’s Indian Restaurant at the corner of Davis Drive and McCrimmon Parkway in Morrisville has closed. But it didn’t take long for that space to fill back up. It has become Hyderabadhouse Indian Restaurant | Birayni Place. This will mark the chain’s 18th location. Check the local operation out on Facebook here and their website here.
  • The News & Observer reported that Raleigh ice cream shop Fresh has made plans to open a second location (original location is at 6033 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh) in downtown Cary at 138 E. Chatham Street. Look for them to open next Spring. Check them out here.
  • Also on E. Chatham Street in Cary, the News & Observer reported that a market, cafe and wine bar featuring European cuisine is slated to open next year in the former Dorry’s Downtown space (and before that the legendary deli The Food Factory). Pro’s Epicurean Market and Cafe is the creation of chef Richard Procida. We couldn’t find a website, but here is the article in the News & Observer.
  • And next door, in the new building going up, Pizzeria Faulisi, which will serve Neapolitan-style pizza, expects to open in late January or early February. Check them out.
  • Also in Cary, got word from Michael DePersia that the former San Remo space in Cary’s Millpond Village (where Publix just opened) will become a Thai restaurant called Thai Lotus.
  • Michael also shared that the Michael Markham will transform the former Amedeo’s of Apex into another Brew n Que, serving craft beer and bbq. This will be the second location of Brew n Que (original brick and mortar location on Maynard Road in Cary). No word yet on an open date. We will keep an eye on it. Check out Brew n Que here.
  • Over in Raleigh, tomorrow (November 19) is the grand opening of Anisette, a neighborhood treat shop near Raleigh’s Five Points (at 209 Bickett Blvd). It is the creation of former Videri Chocolate Factory head confectioner Nicole Evans Groth and her husband, Jason. They open at 11 a.m. Get all the details on their Facebook page here.
  • The Raleigh Agenda  reported that next month Song Peebua will open his second restaurant (he owns the Thai House on Wake Forest Road) named Mama Jee, a new Thai and sushi restaurant which will be located on the ground floor of the Friendly Apartments, located at the corner of Hillsborough Street and Friendly Street.   • Also in Raleigh, WRAL noted that The Outpost, just off Moore Square in downtown, has opened serving up coffee, smoothies, and tiki cocktails. It is located in the former home of Notte Urbana, and before that Holly’s on Hargett and before that Mo’s Diner. Check them out on Facebook here.
  • Staying in Raleigh, if you are looking for free pizza for a year (who isn’t?), be one of the first 100 in line today at Pieology Pizzeria in North Hills as they celebrate their grand opening this weekend with activities planned today and through the weekend. Get all the details here.
  • Amorino, a dessertery straight from Italy, will open to the public next Tuesday, Nov. 22, in downtown Raleigh (more specifically to the street level of the Edison Lofts at 137 Davie St.). It’s best known for its gorgeous cones in which servers create a gelato rose. They also serve amazing hot drinks, crepes, macaroons and more. This is a BIG deal for Raleigh, joining Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Boston and New York among other locations in the United States. Learn more about Amorino here.
  • And then there were three…The Triangle’s third b.good fast-casual eatery opened yesterday in Morrisville’s Park West Village. b.good already has locations in Raleigh’s North Hills and in downtown Raleigh on Fayetteville Street. Check out the new location here.
  • Down in Holly Springs, Blaze Pizza opens today and will be offering free pizza to all who follow them on one of their social media platforms. It is located in the Holly Springs Towne Center, beside the Carmike Cinemas Ovation Cinema Grill 9. Check out Blaze here.
  • And in Fuquay Varina, reader Aaron Bradshaw tweeted that he noticed that there is a banner for a Zeera Indian Restaurant on the front of the closed Mt. Fuji Restaurant.

Durham, Orange & Chatham Restaurant News

  • Bites of Bull City blogger Amber Watson sent word that Bull Durham Beer Company with Heavenly Buffaloes have opened their bar garden adjacent to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park called The Bullpen. They are located in the space originally occupied by Ed Mitchell’s Que. Check them out on Facebook here.
  • Got word that The Cookery, one of Durham’s favorite event spaces, is expanding into the adjacent building. The expansion will include a ballroom, bridal suite, private garden and extended kitchen space. Get all the details here.
  • Also in Durham, WRAL reported that the Belgian Waffle Crafters food truck has opened a kiosk at Southpoint just in time for the holiday. WRAL noted this is the third food truck to open a “brick and mortar” location in the mall’s food court. Check them out here.

Closings

  • Reader Bianca Bradford tipped me off to the fact that Tom Yum Thai in Cary closed.
  • Reader Chris Creighton informed me about multiple closures. They include Lime Fresh Mexican Grill in Morrisville; Able Bar & Grill in Cary; and the Qdoba Mexican Grill on Walnut St  in Cary.
  • And we learned from reader John Norris that Mesa Latin Kitchen on Durham’s Hillsborough Road has closed. Looks like it might be turned into an event space.

Food Trucks

  • Rudolf’s Food Truck rodeo will be held in Knightdale on Sunday, December 4th from 12-4 p.m. at the Knightdale Station Park. Look for 10+ trucks, beer, Santa Claus, live muic and kids’ activities. Get all the details here.

  • On November 30th, Piedmont’s executive chef John May welcomes chef Dean Neff of PinPoint in Wilmington, NC to collaborate on a 6-course Gullah-inspired dinner celebrating sustainably farmed oysters; each course will be paired with sparkling wines from different regions, highlighting the breadth and variety of these wines. Locals Seafood will supply North Carolina oysters from Chadwick Creek, Harkers Island, Newport River, and Masonboro, and funds raised support North Carolina Catch. The dinner is at 6:30pm. The $65/ person menu is also available for $95, with sparkling wine pairings. Contact 919-683-1213 for reservations.
  • Triangle Family Services will host its 14th annual Gingerbread Benefit on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center in RTP. This daylong fundraising benefit, running from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., features the Triangle’s best chefs and bakers creating gingerbread masterpieces in lieu of the upcoming holidays.   • On Thursday, December 1st, Humble Pie and Wine Authorities are hosting their first ever Meinklang Wine & Winter Feast on the patio complete with a dinner served family style (fire pits to ensure guests are cozy) and of course select Meinklang natural wines.   • Piedmont’s general manager and beverage director Crawford Leavoy welcomes Bernie Lubbers, global whiskey ambassador for Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, KY, for a 5-course whiskey-paired dinner Wednesday, December 7th at 6:30. This unique dinner will feature 3 whiskey cocktails, two whiskeys served neat, and one on the rocks – all alongside chef John May’s locally sourced, Southern cuisine.   • On December 15 at 6:30 p.m., Teddy Diggs, executive chef of Il Palio, will join forces with international seafood expert, Barton Seaver, to craft a fresh approach to the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Hosted at Il Palio in Chapel Hill, this historic Italian feast will feature exclusively sustainably sourced seafood, showcasing recipes from Seaver’s acclaimed cookbook, Two If By Sea, and classics from chef Diggs’ Italian repertoire.   • Tuesday, November 29th is Giving Tuesday at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Wake County Restaurant News

  • So a quick update on the changes over at Academy Street Bistro in Cary (just a few weeks ago it was announced that there had been a sudden change in ownership.) We have now learned that Tom Havrish chef/owner of Lugano Ristorante in Cary, is the new owner. We haven’t received an update yet on its plans to reopen (it may already have done so). We will keep up with this. Here is their Facebook page.
  • Also in Cary, got a press release announcing that the groundbreaking ceremony for a permanent retail location of Annelore’s German Bakery, a home-based, authentic German pastry and bread bakery, is planned for next Monday, November 14 at 4 p.m. at 308 W. Chatham Street in downtown Cary. You can keep up with their progress on their Facebook page here.
  • Over in Raleigh a couple of quick updates. The Raleigh Agenda posted an update that signage has gone up for Royale, an American bistro, moving into the former Batistella’s space on Raleigh’s Moore Square. Royale is from the same guys behind Stanbury and Cafe Lucarne. They are expected to open next month. Keep up with them on Twitter here.
  • And we got a press release announcing that Ed Mitchell is launching a food truck, Ed’s Q on Wheels, that can be booked for holiday parties. His brick and mortar location, Ed Mitchell’s Q at The Creek, in Brier Creek has broken ground. And finally, that Ed is no longer considering a space inside the Morgan Street Food Hall & Market in downtown Raleigh. Keep up with Ed on Twitter here.

Durham, Orange & Chatham Restaurant News

  • The openings in Chatham County just south of Chapel Hill, in the Veranda development located at the 15-501 entrance to Briar Chapel, continue. Just this past Monday, Town Hall Burger & Beer at Briar Chapel swung open their doors (and rolled up their garage doors!). And this week we saw the soft-opening of Breakaway Cafe, combining coffee, food, beer and bicycles…Check out Breakaway here and Beer & Burger here.
  • Over in Durham, the British Indian gastropub, Viceroy, located in the five-points area of downtown Durham, is scheduled to open any day now. I was invited to a media event next week, so it is very, very close. Check them out on Facebook here.
  • Also in Durham, I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the long-standing Spartacus restaurant had been completely leveled. Reader Cori Harrell Nix notified me that that spot is to become the next Chick-fil-A in the Triangle.
  • In Chapel Hill, got word from reader Thomas Viemont that there is a “Cuban Revolution” sign on the front of the former Mina’s Grill at 401 W. Franklin Street. Apparently there is quite a bit of renovation taking place, so it may be awhile before we see that open. Check out Cuban Revolution (located in Durham’s American Tobacco Campus) here.

  • Got word from a reader that Godavari, serving South Indian food, on Strickland Road in Raleigh has closed.

  • Obviously today is Veterans Day, and lots of restaurants do their part to celebrate and thank our veterans. WRAL has composed a great list of offerings that you can enjoy today.
  • Friend David McCreary tipped me off to SAVOR Fuquay-Varina, a culinary event with music, auctions, great food and great and a celebratory atmosphere. The event will take place Saturday, November 12th from 2-6 p.m. at the Bob Barker Company, 105 N. Main Street in Fuquay-Varina. Area restaurants and caterers come together in a friendly competition.   • And John Huisman, aka Triangle Explorer, pointed out that Teddy Diggs, executive chef of Il Palio in Chapel Hill, and renowned author Katie Parla are teaming up to host a culinary tour of Italy’s capital. Hosted at Il Palio on November 15th, this Tasting Rome feast will feature recipes from Parla’s acclaimed cookbook, Tasting Rome, along with classics from Chef Diggs’ regional Italian repertoire.   • Enjoy soups from top Triangle chefs as they compete to win the title of Soup-erior Chef at Urban Ministries of Wake County’s twelfth annual Stone Soup Supper on Wednesday, November 16th at the McKimmon Center at NC State University. For a $25 donation, guests receive unlimited bowls of artisan soups from more than 10 competing chefs and one hand-crafted piece of pottery from the Triangle Potters Guild. Food Bank Corner

  • Exciting things have been happening at your Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina! They have moved to a much larger facility to accommodate their expanded operations and the continued need for food assistance. In celebration of this move, they invite you to their Community Open House THIS Saturday, November 12th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. (tours, food truck rodeo and fun & games).
