Featured Restaurant News

  • LM Restaurants announced this week that construction is underway for Birdie’s Barroom & Kitchen, located on the first floor of the landmark 150 Fayetteville Street building in Downtown Raleigh. The planned 150-seat restaurant will serve guests from sunrise to moonrise and feature a morning barista-led café, as well as a private event room for business meetings and special events. The restaurant will feature a central bar-in-the-round with ample indoor and outdoor seating, exclusively designed to provide outdoor dining and special event space. Wake County Restaurant News

  • Got word this week from Christina Coffey that La Farm Bakery is coming to Raleigh! La Farm will open a location in the Creekside Crossing shopping center in the former Tropical Picken Chicken space at the intersection of Six Forks and Wake Forest roads. No word on a timeline. Visit La Farm here.

  • This is mostly Wake County news, so we will place it here. Following up on the news of the closing of all the stand-alone PDQ locations in the Triangle, Raleigh Downtown shared on Facebook what will become of those locations. Mostly, they will become Whataburgers, with one becoming a CookOut. Here is the rundown: Raleigh (6305 Falls Of Neuse) – Whataburger; Cary (9025 Winston Hill) – Whataburger; Durham (3301 Watkins Rd) – Whataburger; Wake Forest (11690 Northpark Drive) – Cookout. These will be the first locations in North Carolina for the Texas-based chain. Get to know them here.

  • RALtoday shared the news that Mac’s Speed Shop in Raleigh’s Five Points (in the former Lonerider space next to The Rialto) will open on March 25. This will mark their 10th location and the first in the Triangle. Mac’s was founded 18 years ago by Wynn Davis and Hall Johnston as a place that would blend their love for BBQ, beer and bikes. Everything is made from scratch including the barbecue sauces and dressings. But don’t worry, you don’t have to have a Harley, your minivan (and dog) are more than welcome there.   • Following up on the news below that Anthem Brewing will close their Smoky Hollow location, RALtoday noted that next-door neighbor Madre will expand into that space with a new concept bar. Madre announced this on their Instagram page. Look for them to open in the spring. Best to follow along on Instagram here.

  • We first reported this in September, 2023, but this week Village District confirmed that the original Cafe Carolina space will become Postino WineCafe, an Arizona-born industrial wine bar and restaurant. They will be offering an ever-changing selection of boutique wines, craft brews and specialty cocktails, paired with a decked-out menu of bruschetta, panini, salads and a lineup of crave-worthy charcuterie boards and shareables.   • Childhood friend and son of the legendary soccer coach Hal Barnes, Kenan Barnes shared the news that there is now signage up in Falls Village Shopping Center for the newest location of Rosati’s Chicago Pizza. They will be located next to Poke Burri and the former Red, Hot & Blue. This will make the second Triangle-area location, with the original spot being over in Morrisville. Get to know them here.

  • My buddy Michael Bongiorno, owner of Bongiorno & Son in Raleigh’s Lafayette Village, shared the news that Soo Café has opened up their second location in Wake Forest at 12281 Wake Forest Hwy. The original location is at 2815 Brentwood Road in Raleigh. Check them out on Facebook here.

  • Got word from a reader that Epic Wings at Brennan Station (8107 Creedmoor Rd., Suite 105) has opened. Located beside Five Guys, this is their first Triangle-area location and the first in North Carolina. Epic Wings started in Southern California in 1982 and currently has 26 locations throughout Southern California and Arizona.   • Over in Cary, reader Jennifer B. shared that Nautical Bowls will hold their grand opening on March 16th. They feature superfood bowls, açaí and more. This will be their first Triangle-area location, and third in the state. They are located at 1205 Parkside Main Street in Parkside Town Commons. Get to know them here.

  • Our friends over at one of Raleigh’s newest dining options, Gussie’s, are tapping into everyone’s inner Irish through March 17thO’Gussie’s springs up inside Gussie’s where you can expect some delicious versions of your favorite dishes – Bangers & Mash, Shepherd’s Pie, Corned Beef & Cabbage, with some fun twists (house made corned beef sausages and Irish nachos anyone?). For when you’re thirsty, come for the Irish Coffee (with Left Hook Coffee, Irish Whiskey and Fresh Whipped Cream), cocktails fit for the season, Guinness, and a selection of Irish whiskies to enjoy on their own or in one of our housemade sodas. Follow along on Instagram.

  • And congratulations to our friends over at Raleigh Brewing Company as they celebrate their 11th anniversary this Saturday, March 9th. They are celebrating with the biggest party of the year with live music, beer, food trucks, and so much more! Visit them here.

Durham, Orange & Chatham Restaurant News

  • Big news on Chapel Hill’s Franklin Street. The current location of Starbucks (in the 100 block) will move just across the street on the first floor of the Top of the Hill building at the corner of Franklin and Columbia Streets. No word on a timeline.

  • Last week our initial post about Zweli’s was incorrect. Here is how it was corrected, in case you missed the update: Chef Zweli Williams opened the evolved concept of the new enhanced Zweli’s Kitchen in Durham’s Brightleaf Square this week. With the return of Zweli’s Kitchen, almost a year after closing the original location, they join the other two concepts under the Zweli’s umbrella – Zweli’s Ekhaya (at American Tobacco Campus) and Zweli’s Cafe(at Duke Divinity). Make it a priority to get over to enjoy the rich flavors of Zimbabwean cuisine. They are open daily at 11 a.m. and no reservations are required. Visit them on Instagram here.

Closings

  • Axios shared the news this week that Wilmington brewery New Anthem has closed its taproom “indefinitely” in the Smoky Hollow development (see the news above in the Wake section on Madre expanding into that space).

  • Another brewery, Clouds Brewing, also announced an upcoming closure this week of their location at 126 N. West St. Their last day of operation there (they have two other locations) will be on April 7. The hinted at moving to a new location. Come on Raleigh, your reputation as “drunk town” is slipping.

  • Christine Rhyne Johnson shared with us the news that Pieology has closed their North Hills location. The next closest location is in Greensboro.

  • Over in Chapel Hill, reader Cindy R. shared the news that Capriotti’s on Franklin Street has closed. They only opened in May of 2023.

Events

  • Rocky Top Catering’s sixth annual Cooking for the Kids is approaching the grand finale. This cooking competition brought together eight of the Triangle’s premier chefs, and now just two remain. The Finale on Thursday, March 14th will see chef Harry Monds from Lula and Sadie’s and chef Alejandro Uribe of The University Club face-off. All proceeds benefit Overflowing Hands and A Place at the Table. There aren’t many tickets left. Get tickets and all the details here.
  • The West End (23 Rectory Street) will be hosting an afternoon tea on the last Monday of each month from 2:30 – 5 pm. Grab a friend and take a break from your day while enjoying a good cup of tea, yummy treats and some good conversation. Space is limited so reserve your seats today.   • The annual Tacos ‘n Taps will take place this year on Saturday, April 6th at Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre. The event takes place from 1-5 p.m. (VIPs get in at noon). This an “all you care to taste” Beer and Tequila Festival and offers up some of the Triangle’s best tacos and Mexican food, the best dancing music from Triangle area bands, margaritas, contests and some other surprises.  This is NACHO average taco festival. Get tickets and all the details here
  • My buddy Neha Shah, director of the Pittsboro-Siler City Convention & Visitors Bureau, shared that the annual Farm to Fork Picnic, celebrating local food and local farms, will take place Sunday, June 2 from 4pm – 7pm, again at Fearrington VillageGet details and tickets here
  • Tickets are on sale now for the 9th Annual Dinner in the Meadow which will take place on September 15, 2024 on a grassy knoll atMeadow Lane Farm, in bucolic Franklin County, offering beautiful pastoral views and clear, starry skies. Some of the region’s most sought-after chefs will be preparing delicious dishes using ingredients from local farms and food artisans. It is an annual fundraiser for the Leonard-Mobley Small Farm Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 2014 to support and cultivate small farms in our region of North Carolina. Get tickets and all the details here.

Food Bank Corner

  • No doubt we live in a wonderful corner of the world. But here are some things to remember and not forget. Right now, one in five people in central and eastern North Carolina don’t have enough to eat. The Food Bankprovided over 88 million meals to families and individuals last year. The Food Bank’s partner agency network has reported up to a 60% increase in neighbors visiting for food assistance. The need is real and right here in our backyard. Consider helping in 2024. See how here.

  • Chef Zweli Williams opened the evolved concept of the new enhanced Zweli’s Kitchen in Durham’s Brightleaf Square this week. With the return of Zweli’s Kitchen, almost a year after closing the original location, they join the other two concepts under the Zweli’s umbrella – Zweli’s Ekhaya (at American Tobacco Campus) and Zweli’s Cafe (at Duke Divinity).   • Raleigh Magazine shared the anticipated news this week that Sir Walter Coffee will open a second downtown Raleigh location on Fayetteville Street in the former B.Good spot in Charter Square. In the morning and throughout the day, look for them to serve up the coffee and food menu you have come to love in their current location. In the evening, they will transition with the city into evening mode switching to Sir Walter Cocktail – and your favorite adult beverages. Look for them to open this summer. Visit them here.

  • Raleigh Magazine also shared the news this week that there is no slowing down Giorgios Bakatsias. His latest concept – Giorgios Epicurean Market – will open mid- to late-April in East End Market adjacent to another of his concepts – East End Bistro. The market will feature a Euro-style market and all-day (morning to night) cafe with an emphasis on Greek, European and Asian flavors—think classic and nouveau European breakfast items, Mediterranean salads, lingue di pizza and Asian stir-fries – according to the magazine.   • WRAL shared the news that Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard has opened in Cary at 921 North Harrison Ave. The shop features more than 75 flavors of Italian ice made on-site daily as well as frozen custard, gelati, concretes and milkshakes. Visit Rita’s here.

  • Thanks to a post on the Today in the Quay Facebook page we learned that SupaBowlz Cafe has opened at 411 Broad Street in Fuquay-Varina. The cafe features acai bowls, wraps, smoothies, poke bowls and salads. They also have a location in Holly Springs. Visit them here.

Durham, Orange & Chatham Restaurant News

  • Excited to share the news that the latest eating and drinking concept for the booming town of Pittsboro in Chatham County is now open. Hops & Berry has been in ‘soft open’ mode this week and begins regular hours this weekend. It is a self-serve, pay by the ounce taproom and restaurant with what looks like a pretty yummy upscale bar menu. They are located at 120 Mosaic Blvd. in the Mosaic section of Chatham Park. This is their first location in North Carolina (they have two other locations). Check them out on Facebook here.

Closings

  • The News & Observer shared the news yesterday that the Happy + Hale location  on Fayetteville Street in One City Plaza in downtown Raleigh closed. That is the bad news. The good news is they still have four other locations and they are actively looking for a larger space in downtown Raleigh.

Food Trucks

  • Saw on RALToday that there is a monthly food truck rodeo – Raleigh Foodie Fare – happening the first Saturday of the month (so beginning THIS Saturday, March 2) for the balance of the year. It takes place at Raleigh Iron Works (2221 Iron Works Drive Raleigh, NC) from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and features 30+ local vendors, a mini food truck rodeo (6-8 trucks), drinks, and more!
